Introduction to The College Council

The College Council is the ultimate governing body of the College, with responsibility for financial probity and for setting its overall strategic direction. 

It has 25 members, the majority from outside the College (lay members), each appointed for a fixed term.  Of the 16 lay members, two are from local authorities, one is appointed by the Privy Council and one by the University of London.  Two more are appointed as alumni of either the present college or its two predecessors; Bedford College and Royal Holloway College.  The remainder are freely selected to produce a range of skills and experience for the College to draw on.

The lay members also serve on College committees such as Finance; Strategic Policy; Estates and Human Resources & Equal Opportunities. The members of Council are also the trustees of the Founder’s Endowment Fund, a trust established in 1992 for the benefit of the College.

The Chairman of the Council, Sir Andrew Burns, is a lay member and is appointed for five years.  In addition to leading the Council, he chairs a number of committees including the Remuneration Committee, which deals with pay and benefits for the most senior staff.  The Acting Principal, Professor Rob Kemp, is answerable to the Chairman.

Council members, both lay and staff, devote a considerable amount of their own time to the College.  Much of this is devoted to governance activities but they also help to promote the interests of the College, building networks and encouraging supporters.
