Volunteering Abroad Projects

The College's Community Action volunteering programme does not co-ordinate overseas projects. We do though keep a folder of volunteering abroad opportunities information sent through to us. Please contact the Community Action office if you want to access this resource as you are welcome to come and have a browse whenever. Some of the projects we have information on include;

  • Tenteleni (educational support to vulnerable children in African Countires)
  • Camps International Ltd (sports development expedition to Kenya)
  • Archelon (working for the endangered sea turtles in Greece)
  • Go Eco (wildlife & humanitarian projects)
  • Frontier (conservation education exploration)
  • Projects Abroad (conservation and environment)
  • Concordia (support community based projects)
  • UNA Exchange (Environmental, renovation, social and cultural project

Other organisations include; Cross Cultural Solutions, The Daneford Trust, United Playground, Worldwide Helpers, VESL and many more.

Further to this the Students' Union RAG has in the past hosted a volunteering abroad trip each summer. Contact VP Education and Welfare for further details on how to apply.

Volunteering in another country can have considerable impact on you as an individual as you experience a different culture and engage with the needs of the people. However we would urge all potential volunteers who wish to work on volunteering abroad projects to ask themselves whether their volunteering fills a genuine need in the local community and whether it merits the often considerable amounts of money spent and distance travelled. It is crucial that overseas volunteering is planned well in advance and that you can commit to a significant length of time.

The Rayleigh Graduate BursaryThe Raleigh Graduate Bursary Award for Volunteering Overseas is an initiative, part-funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Aimed at recent graduates looking to gain new experiences and become global citizens, the scheme offers 10-week expeditions to Borneo, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and India.

Opportunities enable participants to develop skills such as team work, leadership, project management and problem solving, confidence and self awareness, and communication skills. The bursary award is only available to recent graduates or those about to graduate, who are aged 24 and under, and who are able to prove that an overseas expedition would be beyond their financial means without assistance.
